APRIL 21, 2009 Meeting

"CRITIQUE AND COMPETITION"

The April 21st meeting, competition will be judged by the FIA, Flint Institute of Arts, Manager of the Rental/Sales Gallery, Harriet Lay. The competition is open to all paid Guild members. Each member is able to enter one piece of artwork. The FIA gallery has room for approximately 18 pieces. All Artwork must be checked in by 6:30pm on April 21st, to give the judge a chance to view each entry. Each piece will be checked at the door to make sure the hanging guidelines have been followed. Please bring easels, stands, or whatever is necessary to display your work. If you have sculpture or pottery and can supply your own stands we will be able to display more pieces.

Cash prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. There will also be 3 honorable mentions.

If you are chosen for the FIA gallery the art pieces must be for sale or able to meet the gallery rental guidelines. The FIA drop off will be on May 1, 2009 between 10am - 1:10pm at the FIA Rental Gallery. Reception will be May 3, 2009, from 1:00-3:00pm at the FIA Rental Gallery. The artist will be responsible for sending out their own invitations for the reception.

Art Content:
-Original art will be the only type accepted.
-Original art, the piece as a "whole" cannot be from a commercial mold or kit. It cannot be copied from another artist.
_Acceptable Medias are all paint types, pastels, inks, and etching, one of a kind printmaking like monoprints, woodblock, or photography, mixed media and collage. Any sculpture, jewelry or fabric media must be able to hang on a wall or be in an acrylic wall box or frame. Works must not be off the wall more than six inches.
-Weight of the artwork cannot exceed 75lbs.
-NO NUDITY or offensive words or images of any kind.

Gregg Bugala, is a wonderful muralist. He has done murals at the Companion Animal Hospital in Linden and the Bicycle shop in Fenton.

He is going to present a short video on buon fresco painting. It’s an ancient mural painting technique used by Michelangelo, Raphael, Tiepolo and most recently, Diego Rivera. There are only a few contemporaries in this country still using it today in the USA. He has painted in buon fresco and has found it challenging and sublimely beautiful. He will include photos of all his latest murals that he’s painted all over the country.
